Module 3: The Business of Football

Unit 14: Social Media & The Fans

Register, Tone & Audience

Controlling the Narrative.

After a match, millions of fans will look at your social media. If you win, it's a celebration. If you lose—especially if you made a mistake—it is a warzone. You must know how to adjust your Register (your tone and level of formality) depending on the situation. A casual joke after a terrible defeat is a PR disaster. A formal corporate statement after winning the cup is boring. You must know your audience.

3. Grammar Mechanics: Tone and Register

On social media, your Register (how formal or informal you are) dictates how the fans will react. A misplaced joke after a 5-0 loss will ruin your relationship with the supporters.

Register / Tone Grammar Features Social Media Example
Formal (The Apology) No contractions (I am, do not). Full sentences. Passive voice. Formal vocabulary. "My actions were unacceptable. I wish to apologize to the supporters."
Neutral (The Defeat) Contractions used. Standard grammar. Forward-looking phrases. "We're absolutely gutted tonight. It wasn't our day. We will bounce back."
Informal (The Celebration) Exclamation marks, slang, emojis, short fragments, direct address to the fans. "Unbelievable scenes! You guys were massive today! 🚀🔥"

PR Rule: Never use an exclamation mark (!) when apologizing for a mistake. It looks insincere.

4. Reading: Managing the Crisis

Notice how the PR Manager forces the Player to change his tone from defensive and informal to a highly formal apology.

Player: My mentions are a mess. I'm getting abused by every troll on Twitter for that red card. I'm going to reply and tell them the referee was terrible.
PR Manager: Do not post that. If you blame the referee, the FA will fine you, and the fans will think you are arrogant. We need to release a formal statement.
Player: Fine. "Sorry guys, bad tackle but the ref was harsh. We go again next week! 👊"
PR Manager: No emojis. No slang. You kicked a player. You need to hold your hands up and take responsibility. Change the tone.
Player: "I want to sincerely apologize for my red card today. My challenge was unacceptable and I let my teammates down."
PR Manager: Better. Now thank the fans in the away end and look to the future.
Player: "Thank you for the incredible support. I will work hard to help the team bounce back."
PR Manager: Perfect tone. Post it, log out, and do not look at the comments.
