3. Grammar Mechanics: Modals of Possibility

When a client asks for something highly specific, you rarely want to say an immediate "Yes" or "No". You need to leave room for negotiation. Using Modals of Possibility allows you to discuss what *could* happen, depending on the price or the boundaries.

Modal Verb The Level of Certainty Professional Example
Can / Could General Possibility or Ability. ("Could" is slightly more polite and hesitant than "can"). "I can film that for you tomorrow."
"We could add your name to the script."
Might / May Uncertain Possibility (50/50). Used when you aren't sure yet, or when setting conditions. "I might be able to do that, but there is an upcharge."
"Delivery may take up to 7 days."
Would Conditional Possibility. Used when imagining a scenario or offering a polite alternative. "Would you prefer a 5-minute or 10-minute video?"

Pro Tip: Use "might" or "could" to soften a refusal before offering an alternative. (e.g., "I might not be able to do X, but I could offer Y.")

4. Reading: The Upsell Negotiation

Notice how the Creator uses modals of possibility to gently negotiate the price and terms of a bespoke video request.

Subscriber: Hi! I'd love to order a bespoke video. I want a 10-minute scene where you wear a specific latex suit and say my name throughout.
Creator: Hello! Thank you for the request. I can certainly offer a 10-minute video. However, purchasing a specific new outfit falls outside my usual content. There is an upcharge for that request to cover the cost of the clothing.
Subscriber: That makes sense. How much extra would it be?
Creator: The outfit might cost around $80. So the total for the video and the outfit would be $230. Does this fit your budget?
Subscriber: That's a bit high for me right now.
Creator: No problem. I can offer an alternative. I could wear an outfit I already own, and we waive the clothing fee. I may have something similar in my closet.
Subscriber: Perfect, let's do that! When can I expect the deliverable?
Creator: My standard turnaround time is 7 days. I will send a short teaser once filming is complete!

5. Interactive Practice: Managing Expectations

Exercise A: Choose the Polite Modal

1. A client asks for a rush order. You want to say it's possible, but it depends on your schedule. "I ___________ be able to deliver it by tomorrow, but I have to check my calendar."

2. You want to politely suggest an alternative idea to a client. "We ___________ change the script to match your budget."

Exercise B: Complete the Expressions

Type the missing words to complete these negotiation expressions.

1. There is an for specific clothing requests.

2. I can offer an if that price is too high.

6. Professional Speaking Practice 🎙️

  1. Roleplay: A client asks for a highly explicit custom video. Use the expression "This falls outside my usual content" to explain why there will be an upcharge.
  2. Explain your standard turnaround time to a new client. What might cause a delay in delivering the final deliverable?
  3. How can offering a short teaser help you secure payment before sending the full video?
  4. Practice using "could" and "might" to gently reject a script idea and offer a safer, alternative option.
