Module 3: Digital Work & Client Interaction

Unit 14: Handling Harassment & Trolls

The Passive Voice

Objective and Detached.

A highly visible digital career attracts trolls and people who will try to push your limits. Engaging emotionally with harassment is a massive drain on your time and energy. You must learn to communicate sanctions and file reports using the Passive Voice. The passive voice removes the personal element, making your statements sound like objective, unbreakable platform rules rather than personal attacks.

3. Grammar Mechanics: The Passive Voice

When you use the Active Voice ("I blocked you"), it sounds personal and emotional. By using the Passive Voice ("You were blocked"), you focus on the *action* rather than the *person* doing it. This sounds highly professional, detached, and final.

Structure Active Voice (Emotional/Personal) Passive Voice (Objective/Detached)
Present Simple
(am/is/are + V3)
"I ignore unsolicited messages." "Unsolicited messages are ignored."
Present Perfect
(has/have been + V3)
"I have reported your account." "Your account has been reported."
Past Simple
(was/were + V3)
"Someone leaked my video." "My video was leaked."

Pro Tip: Use the Passive Voice when you want to sound like an automated system or a legal document. It prevents the troll from arguing with "you" personally.

4. Reading: Contacting Platform Support

Notice how the Creator uses the Passive Voice to professionally report a piracy issue to the platform's support team.

Support: Hello, this is Creator Support. How can we assist you today?
Creator: Hello. I am contacting you regarding a copyright violation. A premium video was leaked yesterday and uploaded to a public forum.
Support: We are sorry to hear that. Do you know who leaked the content?
Creator: Yes, the user's IP address was identified by my team. The user has been reported via the automated system, and their access to my page has been restricted.
Support: Thank you for the information. We will investigate the account.
Creator: Furthermore, I have received unsolicited, abusive messages from alternative accounts linked to this user. This constitutes harassment. I request that a zero-tolerance policy is enforced and all associated accounts are permanently banned.
