Module 3: The Aftermath & The Gossip

Unit 17: The "U Up?" Text

Time Clauses & Texting Anxiety

💋 Step away from the phone.

It's 2:14 AM. You're lying in bed staring at your ceiling, debating whether to send the dreaded "U Up?" text. Or worse, you sent it an hour ago and you've been left on read. Navigating the timeline of modern romance requires strategy, patience, and Future Time Clauses. You need to know exactly what you are going to do when he replies, or what you'll do if he doesn't. And remember the golden rule: Never double text until you've sobered up.

2. Grammar Mechanics: The Golden Rule of Time

When we make plans or predictions about the future using time words (when, as soon as, until, before, after), English plays a cruel trick on us. We CANNOT use 'will' directly after the time word. We have to use the Present Simple!

Main Clause (Future/Imperative) Time Word Time Clause (Present Simple)
I will reply as soon as he texts me.
(NOT: as soon as he will text me)
Don't send another message until you sober up.
(NOT: until you will sober up)
We are going to leave before he wakes up.

3. Reading: The Texting Strategy

Notice how Jess and Sam avoid using 'will' after their time words!

Sam: I sent him a message an hour ago. He left me on read! I'm going to double text.
Jess: NO! Put the phone down. You need to play it cool.
Sam: I can't. I'll delete his number if he doesn't reply in five minutes.
Jess: He is probably just playing games. When he finally replies, you must ignore him.
Sam: Good idea. I won't message him back until tomorrow morning.
Jess: Exactly. We'll go out for drinks, and as soon as we get to the pub, you'll forget all about him.

4. Interactive Practice: Timing is Everything

Exercise A: Choose the right Tense

1. I will call you a taxi as soon as you ready.

2. Please don't look at my messages while I in the bathroom.

3. She isn't going to talk to him until he .

Exercise B: Complete the Strategy

Fill in the blank with the correct time word (when, until, as soon as, before).

1. I will block his number he sends me another thirsty text.

2. We need to leave it gets too late and the buses stop running.

5. Speaking Practice: Spilling the Tea ☕

  1. Have you ever sent a "U Up?" text? What will you do when someone sends one to you?
  2. How long do you usually wait before you reply to someone you fancy? Do you try to play it cool?
  3. What is the worst excuse someone has given you after leaving you on read for a whole day?
  4. Do you have your read receipts turned on or off? Why?
  5. If a mate is about to send a desperate double text at 3 AM, what will you tell them before they hit send?
