Module 4: Hypotheticals & Regrets

Unit 20: If Only I Hadn't Swiped Right

The Third Conditional & Tragic Regrets

💋 Hindsight is a beautiful, painful thing.

We’ve all looked back at a terrible dating decision and thought, "Why did I do that?" The Third Conditional is the grammar of pure regret. We use it to talk about past situations that we cannot change, and imagine what would have happened if we had made a different choice. Whether you're mourning a lost love or celebrating the fact that you dodged a bullet, this is the grammar you need to rewrite history.

📖 Survival Glossary: Intro Edition

2. Grammar Mechanics: Changing the Unchangeable

The Third Conditional is completely imaginary. The condition is in the past (so it can't be changed), and the result is in the past (so it didn't happen). It requires a lot of verbs, so take a deep breath.

The Condition (The Past Regret) The Result (The Imaginary Past) Cheeky Example
If + Past Perfect
(had + V3)
would have + V3
(past participle)
"If I had seen his red flags, I would have unmatched him."
(Reality: I didn't see the flags, so I didn't unmatch him.)
If + Negative Past Perfect
(hadn't + V3)
wouldn't have + V3
(past participle)
"If I hadn't drunk so much, I wouldn't have texted my ex."
(Reality: I got drunk, and I absolutely texted him.)

3. Reading: The Tinder Tragedy

Notice how Ben and Sophie use the Third Conditional to rewrite Ben's disastrous evening!

Sophie: So, how was the Tinder date? Was it a catastrophe?
Ben: Worse. If I had known she had so much baggage, I wouldn't have swiped right.
Sophie: Oh no. What did she do?
Ben: She talked about her ex-husband for two hours. If she hadn't mentioned him so much, we would have had a nice time.
Sophie: You definitely dodged a bullet. Did you just leave?
Ben: I tried! But when the bill came, she asked me to pay for everything. If I had been braver, I would have refused! I got the ick so badly.

4. Interactive Practice: Rewriting History

Exercise A: Choose the right Structure

1. If I had known he was a player, I him my number.

2. We earlier if the date had been boring.

3. If she so rude to the waiter, I would have paid the bill.

Exercise B: Type the Regret

Use the Third Conditional to complete these tragic regrets. (Use 'have' + the V3 form of the verb in brackets!)

If I had brought my wallet, I would (buy) you a drink.

2. (Reality: He lied, so I dumped him.)
If he had told the truth, I wouldn't (dump) him.

5. Speaking Practice: Spilling the Tea ☕

  1. Think of a terrible date you went on. If you had known it was going to be bad, what would you have done instead?
  2. What is the fastest way for a date to give you the ick?
  3. Tell a story about a time you dodged a bullet. What would have happened if you hadn't dodged it?
  4. Have you ever accidentally swiped right on someone you know (like a boss or an ex)? What did you do?
  5. If you hadn't met your best friend, how would your life have been different?
