The Third Conditional & Tragic Regrets
We’ve all looked back at a terrible dating decision and thought, "Why did I do that?" The Third Conditional is the grammar of pure regret. We use it to talk about past situations that we cannot change, and imagine what would have happened if we had made a different choice. Whether you're mourning a lost love or celebrating the fact that you dodged a bullet, this is the grammar you need to rewrite history.
1. The moment he chewed his soup with his mouth open, I got instantly.
2. She had so much emotional , she spent the whole evening crying about her ex-boyfriend.
3. I realized he was still married, so I decided to him on the app.
4. When you rejected that player at the pub, you definitely !
5. The date was a total ; he spilled a full pint of beer all over my white dress.
6. I must have been wearing beer goggles to on his profile.
7. You are a 10/10. Do not for a boring partner just because you're lonely!
8. Luckily, the lack of chemistry was , so we just shook hands and went home.
The Third Conditional is completely imaginary. The condition is in the past (so it can't be changed), and the result is in the past (so it didn't happen). It requires a lot of verbs, so take a deep breath.
| The Condition (The Past Regret) | The Result (The Imaginary Past) | Cheeky Example |
|---|---|---|
| If + Past Perfect (had + V3) |
would have + V3 (past participle) |
"If I had seen his red flags, I would have unmatched him." (Reality: I didn't see the flags, so I didn't unmatch him.) |
| If + Negative Past Perfect (hadn't + V3) |
wouldn't have + V3 (past participle) |
"If I hadn't drunk so much, I wouldn't have texted my ex." (Reality: I got drunk, and I absolutely texted him.) |
Notice how Ben and Sophie use the Third Conditional to rewrite Ben's disastrous evening!
1. If I had known he was a player, I him my number.
2. We earlier if the date had been boring.
3. If she so rude to the waiter, I would have paid the bill.
Use the Third Conditional to complete these tragic regrets. (Use 'have' + the V3 form of the verb in brackets!)
1. (Reality: I was broke, so I didn't buy you a drink.)
If I had brought my wallet, I would (buy) you a drink.
2. (Reality: He lied, so I dumped him.)
If he had told the truth, I wouldn't (dump) him.
