National Rescue Dog Day

A day dedicated to raising awareness about the millions of animals in shelters awaiting adoption. This lesson goes beyond simple pet ownership to explore the complex ethical questions surrounding animal welfare, pedigree breeding versus adoption, and the psychological impact of companion animals on human society.

Speaking Discussion

  • Why do you think some people are still obsessed with buying expensive pedigree breeds when animal shelters are completely overflowing with rescue dogs?
  • Should there be a strict test or license required to own a dog, just like there is for driving a car?
  • Some people treat their pets exactly like human children, even buying them designer clothes and organic food. Do you find this endearing or is it a bit ridiculous?
  • Is it fair to keep large, active dogs in small city apartments, or is that actually borderline cruel?
  • If you had to choose between rescuing an animal with behavioural issues that requires months of training, or a perfectly behaved puppy from a breeder, which path would you take?
  • Do you believe that pets genuinely love their owners, or are they just highly skilled at manipulating us for food and shelter?
  • I'm just a test... ignore me ;)
