World Day of Social Justice
First observed in 2009, the UN World Day of Social Justice aims to support efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, gender equity, and access to social well-being for all. It highlights the fact that social justice is the foundation of global peace. This lesson explores equity vs. equality—is it enough to treat everyone the same, or must we give extra support to those who start with less? We explore the fairness of the future.
Speaking Discussion
- Is it fair to give some people more help than others to achieve the same result?
- What is the biggest social injustice you see in the world today that no one talks about?
- Can a corporation truly be socially just, or is its only goal to make a profit?
- How can we solve the poverty gap in a way that is fair to both the rich and the poor?
- If you could pass one global law today to improve social justice, what would it be?
