World First Aid Day

Introduced by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000, World First Aid Day aims to raise public awareness of how first aid can prevent injuries and save lives in everyday and crisis situations. Today we're debating the duty to help—should basic first aid training be a legal requirement for every citizen? We explore the hero in everyone and why a few minutes of training can be the difference between life and death.

Speaking Discussion

  • Do you think basic first aid should be a mandatory subject in every school and office?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you had to help someone, or did you feel paralyzed by fear?
  • Should a person be legally responsible if they see an accident and choose not to help?
  • What is the one skill (like CPR) that you think every human being should know by heart?
  • How has technology (like apps or video calls) changed the way we handle medical emergencies?

Activity 1: The Life Saver

You are a First Aid Instructor. You have 30 seconds to convince a busy group of workers that they need to take your course.

Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate

Justify your answer in 30 seconds:

  • "Good Samaritan laws should protect everyone who tries to help."
  • "Fear of doing something wrong is the biggest reason people don't help."
  • "Everyone should have a first aid kit in their car by law."
