When people think of highly organised heists, they usually picture armed robbers targeting gold bullion or diamonds. However, Canadian police are currently investigating a highly ingenious and entirely sticky crime: the theft of £14 million worth of maple syrup from the Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve in Quebec.
The facility, which operates much like a national bank for the beloved breakfast condiment, stores thousands of white metal barrels to protect against global shortages. Last week, during a routine inventory check, inspectors made a massive discovery. Instead of heavy, thick syrup, hundreds of barrels had been emptied and secretly refilled with normal tap water.
Authorities believe the thieves executed the heist over several months. They allegedly rented a warehouse nearby, slowly transported the barrels using unmarked trucks, siphoned out the golden liquid, replaced it with water, and then returned the barrels to the reserve to avoid immediate detection. The level of planning required for such an operation suggests the involvement of a highly sophisticated criminal syndicate.
"It is an absolutely brazen attack on our national heritage," a police spokesperson told reporters. "Maple syrup is not just a food item here; it is an incredibly valuable commodity. Whoever organized this knew exactly how the security protocols worked and had a massive distribution network ready to sell the stolen goods on the black market."
The stolen syrup, which accounts for nearly a quarter of the province's emergency supply, is reportedly being sold in smaller, untraceable batches across the border in the United States. Police have already arrested three individuals who were caught attempting to sell several hundred litres out of the back of a van in a supermarket car park.
Despite the seriousness of the crime, the general public has found the situation highly amusing. Social media is currently flooded with jokes about pancakes and waffles, with many users demanding that Netflix immediately produce a true-crime documentary about the sweet-toothed criminals.
