The Cruise Ship Commuter: Cheaper Than Renting in London

With the cost of living skyrocketing, many young professionals are looking for alternative ways to survive. However, 28-year-old web developer Mark Higgins has found a solution that sounds entirely too good to be true.

The Cruise Ship Commuter: Cheaper Than Renting in London

Fed up with London's rent prices, which he describes as a complete rip-off, Mark packed his bags and moved onto a luxury ocean liner. "I was paying a ridiculous £1,800 a month for a tiny, damp flat," Mark explains enthusiastically over a video call, the Mediterranean Sea clearly visible behind him.

"When I finally did the maths, I realised that booking back-to-back, all-inclusive cruises actually worked out significantly cheaper." By carefully planning his travel schedule months in advance and ruthlessly taking advantage of loyalty discounts, his monthly outgoings have drastically dropped while his quality of life has soared.

NativeUK: What does a typical working day look like for you now? Mark: It's unbelievable. Being constantly on the move comes with incredible perks. Instead of braving the crowded Underground, my morning commute involves a short stroll to the buffet breakfast, followed by opening my laptop by the main pool. I have access to a free gym and daily housekeeping—facilities that would cost a fortune back home. NativeUK: Do you find it hard to stay focused on work in a holiday environment? Mark: You have to be quite disciplined. It is easy to get distracted. Also, if you eat absolutely everything they offer you at the buffet, your medical bills will quickly become sky-high. I try to stick to a strict routine.

Of course, living full-time on a floating hotel isn't always perfectly fancy. The satellite internet connection can occasionally be terribly unreliable, which is an absolute nightmare for a remote web developer trying to join video meetings.

Despite these minor challenges, Mark insists he has absolutely no plans to return to traditional renting anytime soon. He has successfully avoided the frustrating red tape of setting up utility bills, paying council tax, and dealing with difficult landlords. It is a remarkably smart financial move for someone who doesn't mind occasionally feeling a bit seasick.

As long as remote working remains a viable option, the idea of living at sea might catch on. When his ship is smoothly moored in a stunning tropical location every few days, it is very hard to argue with his logic. He simply loves not being tied down to one place.
