Dublin is widely considered the technology capital of Europe, home to the international headquarters of massive global companies. These businesses pay enormous salaries to attract the smartest minds in the software industry. However, one senior developer recently proved that he was slightly too clever for his own good.
The employee, referred to in legal documents only as "Bob", was earning an impressive six-figure salary to write complex computer code for an infrastructure company. Because his company allowed him to work from home, nobody ever physically checked on his daily routine. "Bob" decided to use this freedom to quietly arrange an incredible corporate scam: he entirely outsourced his own job.
Instead of typing code for eight hours a day, "Bob" secretly hired a software consulting firm based in Shenyang, China. He provided them with his secure company login details and paid them a tiny fraction of his own massive salary to complete his assigned tasks. While the foreign contractors did all the hard work, "Bob" spent his days browsing the internet, reading the news, and watching hundreds of hours of Netflix.
The deception was eventually discovered when the company's IT security team noticed highly suspicious activity on their internal network. They conducted a thorough security audit and realised that someone was logging into "Bob"'s employee account from China every single day, exactly during his regular working hours.
"We originally assumed our network had been attacked by foreign hackers," explained the lead security investigator. "We panicked and launched a massive review. We were completely stunned to find out that the 'hacker' was just an external worker who had been happily delegated all of "Bob"'s daily tasks. It was absolutely ridiculous."
The most embarrassing part of the story for the management team is that the foreign contractors were actually doing a fantastic job. The code they submitted under "Bob"'s name was completely exemplary. In fact, just a few months before he was caught, "Bob" had been officially praised by his managers and awarded Employee of the Quarter for writing clean, error-free code ahead of schedule.
Because the scam remained entirely undetected for over a year, "Bob" successfully made thousands of euros doing absolutely nothing. However, as soon as the highly unethical arrangement was exposed, the company acted swiftly. Although they secretly admired the high productivity of the Chinese contractors, sharing secure company passwords with external workers was a massive breach of contract.
"Bob" was immediately dismissed from his position without any financial compensation. While his career in software engineering might be permanently ruined, nobody can deny that he was an incredibly resourceful manager.
