The affluent county of Essex is famous across the United Kingdom for its massive, modern mansions and incredibly wealthy residents. It is a highly attractive target for criminals. Late on a Friday night, a 31-year-old local intruder named Gary successfully managed to break into a massive luxury property through a small, unlocked kitchen window. The homeowners were away attending a family wedding, giving Gary the perfect opportunity to completely ransack the empty house in absolute silence.
Gary’s initial plan was quite simple: steal the expensive electronic items, find some expensive jewellery, and escape before sunrise. He gathered two heavy laptops and an expensive gold watch, placing them neatly near the back door. However, instead of leaving the scene of the crime, he made a catastrophic mistake. He walked into the main living room and was immediately distracted by the incredibly plush, deep velvet sofa sitting in front of a massive cinema television.
Perhaps suffering from extreme fatigue after carrying the heavy electronics, Gary decided he deserved a quick break. He walked back into the kitchen, opened the fridge, and poured himself a large glass of the homeowner's expensive vintage red wine. To make himself even more comfortable, he found a designer silk dressing gown hanging in the bathroom and put it on over his dark clothing. He sat down, drank the wine, and almost instantly fell into a deep, peaceful slumber.
"It was absolutely terrifying but also incredibly funny," explained David, the wealthy homeowner who arrived back at the property early the next morning. "My wife and I walked into our living room, and there was a strange man snoring loudly on our favourite couch. He looked so peaceful. I was completely baffled. I didn't even want to shout at him; I just immediately dialled the emergency services."
The local police arrived within ten minutes. They could not believe the sheer audacity of the criminal. Instead of a dramatic chase, the officers simply tapped Gary on the shoulder and woke him up. He was quickly handcuffed and apprehended without any struggle whatsoever.
Sergeant Thompson, the officer who made the arrest, described the morning as entirely surreal. "Usually, we have to chase these guys over garden fences and through dark alleys. This was definitely the easiest arrest of my entire career. The suspect looked absolutely humiliated when he realised that he was surrounded by police officers while wearing a pink silk robe."
If the homeowner had not arrived early and intervened, the sleeping burglar might have eventually woken up and escaped with the stolen items. However, because of his ridiculous mistake, Gary is now facing a potential prison sentence of up to three years. Legal experts suggest the judge is unlikely to be lenient, proving that stealing is exhausting work, but you should never fall asleep on the job.
