The coastal city of Galway recently invested an incredible forty million euros into building a state-of-the-art marine research vessel. The highly advanced ship was designed to study deep-water ocean temperatures and protect endangered marine wildlife. Hoping to get the younger generation excited about environmental science, the local government launched an optimistic public relations campaign, allowing citizens to vote for the new ship's official title online.
Initially, the suggestions were incredibly poetic and respectful, including names like The Atlantic Explorer and "The Celtic Voyager." However, within just forty-eight hours, the online poll was completely hijacked by social media trolls from a local university. A coordinated effort quickly pushed a highly cheeky, distinctly inappropriate name to the very top of the list.
When the voting finally closed on Sunday evening, the results were a landslide victory. With over 85,000 public votes, the council was legally bound to name their brand-new, highly expensive scientific ship "Putitinmyboatbaby." The ridiculous result instantly generated massive national news coverage and widespread outrage among conservative local politicians.
"It is an absolute disgrace," stated Councillor O'Connor, slamming his fist on his desk during a heated television interview. "We have spent an absolute fortune of the taxpayers' money on a highly prestigious scientific project. Now, the entire international science community is laughing at us. We simply cannot paint this vulgar nonsense on the side of a government ship."
However, the council's desperate attempts to cancel the democratic vote have sparked an even bigger uproar from the general public. Thousands of people have signed petitions demanding that the government respects the final decision.
"They explicitly asked for the public's opinion, and we gave it to them," laughed Declan, a 24-year-old local student who proudly voted for the winning name. "You can't ask the internet for a name and then cry when they choose something funny. It's the rules of the web!"
As the massive media storm continues, the council is desperately trying to negotiate a compromise. They have suggested naming the ship The Irish Explorer, while naming a small, remote-controlled underwater submarine Putitinmyboatbaby instead.
Whether the government is forced to accept the completely absurd title remains to be seen. But the situation is a harsh reminder to corporate marketing teams everywhere: if you don't want the public to trivialise your serious project, do not let them choose the name.
