Behind the Red Light: An Amsterdam Sex Worker on Independence and Stigma

Amsterdam's Red Light District, known locally as De Wallen, is one of the most famous and highly debated tourist destinations in Europe. While the city council frequently discusses moving the historic windows to a suburban 'erotic centre', the workers themselves are fiercely fighting to protect their livelihoods, their safety, and their professional dignity. The debate over this relocation proposal remains highly controversial, raising significant questions about the autonomy of the individuals involved.

NativeUK: Anneliese, how does the regulated system protect you? People often look at us with pity or judgment, but that is a complete misunderstanding of our reality. I am an independent business owner. I rent my own window, set my own hours, and choose my own clients. This work has given me the financial freedom to buy my own apartment and study for a university degree without any debt. Because our work is completely legal, we pay taxes, have access to full police protection, and work in a highly secure, regulated environment with panic buttons. If you criminalise the industry, you simply force workers into the dark, where they are highly vulnerable to extreme exploitation. NativeUK: What are the main challenges you face in this profession? Despite the legal protections, public prejudice and societal stigma remain major issues. Dealings with tourists are often the most exhausting part of the job. We are not tourist attractions; we are working professionals who are simply trying to secure our livelihoods. Tourists who behave disrespectfully fail to understand that this is a highly respectable business, and they must learn to show basic politeness. NativeUK: What do you hope the future holds for the district? I hope that the municipal government will strictly listen to the voices of the workers themselves before making any decisions. The red window is not a symbol of oppression, but a beacon of personal choice, safety, and commercial prosperity for hundreds of independent women.
