Entering Clara's bright London flat, you immediately notice something missing. The bathroom cabinet has a painting over it, the hallway is bare, and even the television screen is covered with a soft cloth when switched off. She hasn't looked at her own face in ten whole years, leading a unique social experiment that most of us would find completely terrifying. We sat down for a cup of tea to ask her how she manages.

The Woman Who Hasn't Looked in a Mirror for Ten Years
In our modern, selfie-obsessed culture, it is almost impossible to go a single day without seeing your own reflection. But artist Clara Hughes decided she had simply seen enough of herself.
NativeUK: Clara, this sounds like a bit of a nightmare. How on earth do you do your makeup or fix your hair?
I don't! That's the beauty of it. I used to be incredibly vain and would spend hours stressing over looking immaculate before leaving the house. If I had a bad hair day, I'd be furious. Now, I just run a brush through my hair by feel and hope for the best. It's actually a completely liberating experience not caring about those things.
NativeUK: But what about walking past shop windows on the high street?
That was really difficult at first! I had to train myself to actively look away from glass. My friends thought I was joking when I first told them, but they got used to it. I've become very good at looking at the pavement or focusing purely on the people I'm talking to. It makes you a much better listener when you aren't secretly checking your own superficial reflection in a café window.
NativeUK: Has this experiment actually made you happier, or are you secretly dying to peek?
I'm genuinely thrilled with the results. We waste so much energy judging our own bodies. Without mirrors, I only know how I feel, not how I look. If I feel vibrant and energetic, that's enough. I don't need a piece of glass to tell me I'm getting older.
Clara's bold lifestyle choice certainly isn't for everyone. When a delivery driver recently asked her to sign for a parcel using a tablet device that accidentally switched to selfie mode, she had to close her eyes and blindly sign the screen.
Yet, spending an afternoon with her in her beautifully tranquil apartment is a surprisingly relaxing experience. Without mirrors in the house, the focus shifts entirely to conversation, comfort, and connection. Perhaps taking a break from our own reflections isn't such a crazy idea after all.
