What does it mean?
This idiom is used to describe a person who is dating, married to, or associated with someone considered significantly more attractive or successful than themselves. The phrase comes from boxing, where a fighter competes against opponents heavier (and presumably stronger) than they are.
Is it positive or negative?
It is usually a compliment to the less attractive/successful person, suggesting they are lucky and have exceeded expectations, but it is often used with a slightly envious or judgmental tone by others.
