What Does “Proficient” English Really Mean?
You don’t need to speak perfect, textbook English to be proficient. A proficient speaker:
- can express ideas clearly and naturally,
- understands native speakers in real conversations,
- and feels confident using English in work, travel and daily life.
Whether you’re just starting to speak or already at an upper level, becoming a proficient speaker is about consistent practice, the right vocabulary, better pronunciation and, most importantly, confidence.
1. Practice Speaking Regularly (Not Just Studying)
The biggest difference between learners who stay “stuck” and those who become fluent is simple: speaking time. Reading and grammar are useful, but they don’t replace real conversation.
Try to:
- schedule at least 2–3 speaking sessions every week,
- use English at work whenever you have the chance,
- and take one-to-one lessons where you speak most of the time.
In my online lessons, the goal is always the same: Giving YOU the chance to SPEAK, not to sit in silence and watch the teacher talk.
2. Build a Useful, Active Vocabulary
Proficient speakers don’t know every word in the dictionary. They know a strong set of useful phrases that they can use quickly and naturally.
Focus on:
- learning phrases, not only single words (for example, “make a decision” instead of just “decision”),
- choosing vocabulary that you actually need for work, studies or travel,
- keeping your own bank of phrases from Useful Words & Phrases and using them in your next conversation.
Review the phrases you want to sound natural with, then push yourself to use them out loud in your next lesson or meeting.
3. Improve Your Pronunciation (Without Losing Your Accent)
You don’t need a “perfect British” or “perfect American” accent to be proficient. What you really need is clear pronunciation so people understand you easily.
Working with a native speaker helps because you get instant feedback on:
- tricky sounds in English,
- word and sentence stress,
- and natural rhythm and intonation.
You can also record yourself speaking, compare your pronunciation to native recordings, and repeat short clips from series or podcasts.
4. Overcome Your Fear of Speaking
Many learners know a lot of grammar and vocabulary, but still feel blocked when they speak. Proficient speakers are not people who never make mistakes – they are people who aren’t afraid of them.
To build confidence:
- start with low-pressure situations like one-to-one lessons,
- set small goals (for example, “tell 3 stories this week”),
- and remember that even native speakers make mistakes.
A good teacher will correct you in a friendly, supportive way – not make you feel embarrassed. If you want to see how I do this, you can read more on How I teach.
5. Watch, Listen and Copy Real English
Proficient speakers don’t only learn English from textbooks. They also get a lot of real input:
- TV series, films and YouTube channels,
- podcasts and interviews,
- articles, blogs and social media.
When you hear a useful phrase, pause, repeat it, and write it down. Try to copy the rhythm and emotion, not only the words. Over time, this makes your English sound much more natural.
6. Find a Speaking Partner or Group
It’s easier to keep going when you’re not alone. A regular speaking partner helps you stay motivated and gives you another chance to practise what you learn.
Good options include:
- language exchange partners who also want to practise,
- small online speaking groups, such as an Online English Speaking Club,
- or a mix of group practice and one-to-one lessons.
The more you use your English in different situations, the faster you feel like a real, independent user of the language.
