Module 2: Consent, Safety, & On-Set Communication

Unit 6: Establishing Boundaries

The First Conditional for "If/Then" Scenarios

Your limits protect your livelihood.

The most important conversation you will have before a shoot is the boundary negotiation. A professional performer knows exactly what their hard limits are and how to enforce them without apology. To communicate these boundaries clearly and effectively, you must use the First Conditional. This grammar structure allows you to establish a firm rule and clearly state the consequence if that rule is ignored.

3. Grammar Mechanics: The First Conditional

To establish a clear boundary, you must link a possible condition (the "If") to a definite consequence (the "Then"). The First Conditional is the grammatical tool you need to make your boundaries legally and professionally clear.

The Condition (The "If") The Consequence (The "Then") Professional Example
If + Present Simple Will + Base Verb "If you ignore my safe word, I will leave the set."
If + Negative Present Simple Will + Base Verb / Will not (Won't) "If you do not provide test results, I will not shoot with you."

⚠️ Pro Tip: Never put "will" in the "If" part of the sentence! (Incorrect: "If you will cross my boundary...")

4. Reading: The Pre-Shoot Negotiation

Notice how the Creator uses the First Conditional to clearly establish their rules with a new Co-star before filming.

Creator: Before we start getting ready, I want to go over my boundary sheet. My comfort level is very important to me.
Co-star: Absolutely. I've read your sheet. I see that kissing is a hard limit for you.
Creator: Yes. It is non-negotiable. If you try to kiss me during the scene, I will stop the shoot immediately.
Co-star: Understood. Let's stick to the agreed script. What is your safe word for today?
Creator: My safe word is 'Yellow'. If I say 'Yellow', it means I need to pause for a check-in.
Co-star: Perfect. And if you say 'Red', we stop entirely, right?
Creator: Exactly. If I use the red safe word, it means I am revoking my consent, and we will wrap the scene for the day. Are you comfortable proceeding with these rules?
Co-star: 100%. Thank you for being so clear.

5. Interactive Practice: Enforcing the Rules
