Module 4: Hypotheticals & Regrets

Unit 19: If I Were a Rich Man...

First & Second Conditionals

💋 Stop daydreaming and look at the yachts.

We’ve all been there: sitting in a cheap pub, sipping a warm pint, and staring at someone across the room who is clearly entirely out of your league. To discuss what you plan to do tonight, you need the First Conditional. But to discuss your wild, unrealistic fantasies of bagging a millionaire who will buy you a penthouse, you need the Second Conditional. Let's learn how to tell the difference between a real possibility and a complete delusion.

2. Grammar Mechanics: Reality vs. Fantasy

Conditionals always have two parts: the "If" part (the condition) and the result. How likely the result is changes the grammar completely.

Type The Formula Cheeky Example
1st Conditional
(Real Possibility)
If + Present Simple,
...will + Base Verb
"If he buys me a drink, I will give him my number."
(This could actually happen tonight.)
2nd Conditional
(Hypothetical/Fantasy)
If + Past Simple,
...would + Base Verb
"If he were a millionaire, I would marry him."
(He is definitely broke, so this is just a fantasy.)

🚨 The Golden Rule of Fantasy: In the 2nd Conditional, we always use "were" for all subjects (If I were, if he were). "If I was" is grammatically incorrect when daydreaming!

3. Reading: The Marina Daydream

Notice how Lucy and Chloe switch between real plans and complete delusions!

Lucy: Look at that yacht! If I were minted, I would live on a boat like that.
Chloe: If you lived on a boat, you would get seasick immediately.
Lucy: True. I just need a sugar daddy. If I found a rich older man, I would never work again.
Chloe: You are such a gold digger! Wake up. We are broke.
Lucy: Fine. But if that fit bartender smiles at me later, I will ask for free shots.
Chloe: Now that's realistic. If he gives us free shots, I will be your wingwoman all night.

4. Interactive Practice: Real or Fake?
