Burning Man

A temporary city built in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. Burning Man is not a festival in the traditional sense; it is an experiment in decommodification where no money is exchanged. Today, we debate the 10 principles of the Burn, the ethics of radical inclusion, and whether modern society could survive if we applied these rules to our everyday lives.

Speaking Discussion

  • Burning Man has a no trace policy (everything must be removed). Is it possible for a 70,000-person event to be truly sustainable?
  • The concept of decommodification means no money or advertising is allowed. How would your city change if advertising were banned for one week?
  • Why do humans feel the need to build temporary societies? What is the psychological appeal of a community that disappears?
  • radical self-Expression is a core principle. In your daily life, how much of your true self do you hide to fit into society?
  • Some critics say Burning Man has become too expensive and elitist. Does high cost destroy the principle of radical inclusion?
  • If you had to build a huge art installation in the desert that represented your country's culture, what would it look like?
