Day of Persons with Disabilities

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. Today, we debate the social model of disability, the importance of universal accessibility in our cities and digital spaces, and how we can foster a truly inclusive society. Is disability a medical condition, or is it a result of a world that is not designed for everyone? How can we remove the barriers to full participation?

Speaking Discussion

  • How accessible is your local community or city for people with different types of disabilities (e.g., physical, sensory, cognitive)? What needs to improve?
  • In your opinion, what is the most significant barrier to employment for people with disabilities? How can businesses address this?
  • What do you think about the social model of disability, which suggests that people are disabled by barriers in society rather than by their impairment?
  • How much of an impact does technology (e.g., screen readers, voice control, assistive devices) have on the independence of people with disabilities?
  • Do you think that invisible disabilities (e.g., mental health conditions, chronic pain) are often overlooked or misunderstood?
  • If you were responsible for designing a new public space, what would be your top three priorities for ensuring universal accessibility?
