Int. Day of UN Peacekeepers

An annual day dedicated to honoring the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations around the world. It serves as a moment to remember those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of peace and to show appreciation for the thousands of personnel currently working in some of the most difficult and dangerous environments. Beyond the tribute, the day highlights the vital importance of international cooperation in resolving conflicts, protecting civilians, and helping countries transition from war to lasting stability.

Speaking Discussion

  • Is neutrality a form of cowardice in the face of evil?
  • Should the UN have a permanent global army that can intervene without permission from big countries?
  • Can peace be forced, or must it grow organically from the people?
  • What is the price of a life? How much should a country spend to save a stranger in another country?
  • If you were a peacekeeper in a conflict, would you follow orders or follow your heart?

Activity 1: The Blue Helmet Commander

The Task: You are a peacekeeper commander on the border of two warring tribes. You are NOT allowed to shoot unless fired upon. One tribe is stealing the other's water supply. You have 3 minutes to prevent a massacre using only words and body language.

Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate

Justify in 30 seconds: 1. 'War is the only way to achieve a lasting peace.' 2. 'If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.' 3. 'A soldier who cannot fight is just a expensive tourist in a uniform.'
