International Day of Peace

Established by the United Nations in 1981, this day is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence. It is a day for a global ceasefire and a call for all nations to work together. Today, we debate whether peace is simply the absence of war, the effectiveness of international diplomacy, and how ordinary citizens can contribute to a culture of non-violence in their daily lives.

Speaking Discussion

  • Does the United Nations (UN) actually have the power to stop major wars, or is it just a symbolic organisation?
  • How can education help to prevent violence and foster a more tolerant society for future generations?
  • Do you believe that non-violent protests (like those of Gandhi or MLK) are more effective than violent uprisings?
  • If you could mediate a conversation between two conflicting nations, what is the first thing you would ask them to agree on?
