International Tea Day
International Tea Day, observed on the 15th of December (and formally on the 21st of May by the UN), honours the 5,000-year history of the leaf that built empires. The day focuses on the global tea trade, cultural traditions, and fair labour practices.
Speaking Discussion
- Why is tea the most consumed drink in the world after water?
- Should we cancel tea because of its history of colonial exploitation?
- Is a tea ceremony a waste of time or a necessary slow life ritual?
- If you could only have tea or coffee for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
- Does caffeine make the world go round, or is it just liquid stress?
Activity 1: The Tea Sommelier
The Task: You are selling a tea leaf that was harvested by moonlight for $500 a cup. You have 3 minutes to market the zen to a room of aggressive businessmen. Convince them that slowing down will make them rich.
Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate
Justify in 30 seconds: 1. 'Coffee is for doers; tea is for thinkers.' 2. 'Nostalgia for the British Empire is a sign of a weak mind.' 3. 'We should prioritise 'Ethical Sourcing' over 'Cheap Prices' for every product.'
