World Animal Day

World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on October 4th, the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Today, we debate the moral status of animals in modern society, the ethics of medical testing, and our shared responsibility to protect the planet's biodiversity. Do animals have human rights, or are they just resources for us to manage?

Speaking Discussion

  • Do you think animals have fundamental rights similar to human rights (like the right to life and freedom from pain)?
  • Is it ethical to use animals for medical testing if it potentially saves thousands of human lives? Where do you draw the line?
  • Why do we treat some animals as pets (like dogs) and others as food (like cows)? Is this logical or purely cultural?
  • If you could volunteer at any animal sanctuary in the world, which animals would you want to help and why?
  • Do you think future generations will look back and judge us for how we treat animals today, similar to how we judge the past?
  • Should there be stricter international laws protecting endangered species, even if it hurts the local economy of a country?
