The Parrot That Ordered £500 of Groceries via Voice Assistant

We live in an age where smart speakers make our lives incredibly convenient, but one family in London has recently learned that this technology is definitely not pet-proof.

When Corinne, a 35-year-old mother from South London, received an email confirming a massive £500 grocery delivery, she was completely astounded. She had certainly not ordered forty boxes of premium strawberries, twenty giant watermelons, and a substantial amount of expensive sunflower seeds. Assuming her account had been hacked by cybercriminals, she immediately called the supermarket's customer service helpline to formally complain.

However, the supermarket confirmed that the order had been placed legitimately using the voice-activated smart speaker sitting in her very own living room. Deeply stunned about how this happened, Corinne checked the speaker's voice recording logs on her smartphone. To her horror, she heard the distinct voice of Rocco, her highly mischievous African Grey parrot, perfectly mimicking her accent to place the massive order.

It turned out that Rocco had been carefully watching Corinne use the smart speaker for weeks, silently memorising the exact wake words and the specific tone of voice required to trigger the online shopping feature. The clever bird had apparently waited until the house was empty before commanding the speaker to deliver all of his favourite tropical treats directly to the front door. "I honestly thought her husband was just hiding behind the sofa playing a prank," laughed the confused delivery driver.

"I was deeply dismayed when I heard his little recorded voice confidently asking for premium watermelons," Corinne explained during a television interview. "He even managed to say 'confirm payment' exactly like I do! The delivery driver was very confused when I had to explain that a bird had ordered all this fresh fruit. I simply cannot believe how clever he is."

The embarrassing fiasco quickly went viral on social media, with thousands of users praising Rocco's brilliant intelligence. The supermarket, seeing the public relations opportunity, generously decided to refund Corinne's money while allowing Rocco to keep all of the delicious, accidentally ordered fruit.

Corinne has since disabled the voice-purchasing feature on all of her smart devices, firmly declaring that her house is no longer safe for modern technology. As for Rocco, he is reportedly trying to figure out how to operate the television remote control.
