World Party Day
The Politics of Joy. Based on the idea that social change can be achieved through celebration, we debate whether having fun is a serious political tool for peace or just a way to distract ourselves from the world's problems.
Speaking Discussion
- Can a shared celebration actually reduce international conflict?
- Is joy a form of resistance in a world that is obsessed with crisis and productivity?
- Why do humans have a biological need for communal dancing and loud music?
- Should the government fund street parties as a way to improve national mental health?
- If you were the DJ for the last party on Earth, what is the first song you would play?
Activity 1: The Peace Negotiator
The Task: Two neighboring countries are on the brink of war. You have been hired to organise a peace festival on the border. Design the theme, the food, and one mandatory activity that forces the two leaders to laugh together. Pitch your celebration strategy.
Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate
Rapid fire justification: 1. 'A society that doesn't know how to party is a society that is ready to collapse.' 2. 'Nightclubs are the modern version of ancient temples.' 3. 'If you can't have fun without alcohol, you aren't actually having fun.'
