Learning to Speak English – Tips and Strategies

Learning to speak English can be challenging, especially if you don’t have many chances to use it in real life. But with the right habits and a clear plan, you can keep speaking English regularly and become a much more confident speaker.

Below you’ll find simple, practical ideas that my students use to build their confidence, improve fluency, and make English a natural part of everyday life.

1. Listen to English Every Day

The first step to improving your English speaking is to listen to English every day. This helps your brain get used to the rhythm, intonation and pronunciation of the language before you even open your mouth.

Try to:

  • listen to English music on your way to work or school,
  • follow podcasts about topics you enjoy,
  • watch series or YouTube videos in English (with English subtitles if needed).

The more natural English you hear, the easier it becomes to copy the sounds when you speak.

2. Speak English Every Day (Even a Little)

Speaking regularly is the best way to improve your speaking skills. You don’t need hours every day – even 5–10 minutes can make a difference if you do it often.

You can:

  • practice with friends, family members or colleagues who speak English,
  • find a conversation partner or language exchange online,
  • join an English speaking club,
  • or take one-to-one lessons where the focus is on you speaking.

3. Record Yourself Speaking

Recording yourself can feel strange at first, but it’s one of the most powerful tools for improving your speaking. You hear yourself the way other people hear you.

Try this simple routine:

  • Choose a small topic (your day, your weekend plans, your job).
  • Speak for 1–2 minutes and record it on your phone.
  • Listen back and notice your pronunciation, intonation and grammar.
  • Record again a few days later and compare your progress.

You can also send short recordings to a teacher or language partner and ask for specific feedback.

4. Learn Common Phrases and Expressions

Learning random single words is slow and tiring. Instead, focus on common phrases and expressions that you can use immediately in real conversations.

For example, phrases for:

  • ordering food and drinks,
  • small talk at work or online meetings,
  • asking for help or clarification,
  • talking about your plans, routines and opinions.

A great way to do this is to build your own bank of useful words and phrases. Save new expressions and then challenge yourself to use them in your next lesson or conversation.

5. Focus on Pronunciation (Not Perfection)

Pronunciation is a key part of English speaking – but you don’t need to sound “perfect” or like a Hollywood actor. Your goal is clear, natural pronunciation.

You can work on this by:

  • practising the sounds that don’t exist in your language,
  • paying attention to stress and intonation in sentences,
  • shadowing (copying) short clips from films, series or podcasts,
  • asking a native speaker to correct just a few key words each lesson.

If you’d like detailed help with pronunciation, one-to-one lessons focused on speaking can really speed things up – you can check my lesson prices for more information.

6. Be Kind to Yourself and Keep Going

Some days your English will feel great. Other days, every word feels difficult. This is completely normal. The most important thing is to keep going.

Remember:

  • mistakes are part of the process, not a sign of failure,
  • small, regular practice beats big “marathons” once a month,
  • you don’t need perfect English – you need usable English.

Keep listening, keep speaking, keep adding new phrases – and your English will grow faster than you expect.
