At, In, On: Prepositions of Place

Location, Location, Location (But With Grammar)

Right, same three words, different job. Now they're telling us where things are instead of when. Think of them as your GPS for grammar - except they actually work properly.

The Location Trinity:

AT = specific points and addresses

IN = enclosed spaces and areas

ON = surfaces and lines

Preposition Used With Examples
AT Specific points, addresses, events at home, at the station, at the party
IN Enclosed spaces, countries, cities in the room, in London, in the car
ON Surfaces, floors, streets on the table, on the floor, on Baker Street

AT - For Specific Points (Pin It on the Map)

Use AT with:

  • Addresses: at 25 Oxford Street, at my house
  • Specific locations: at the bus stop, at the corner
  • Events: at the concert, at the meeting
  • Institutions: at school, at university, at work
  • Activities: at the cinema, at the gym

IN - For Enclosed Spaces (Inside Something)

Use IN with:

  • Rooms: in the kitchen, in the bedroom
  • Buildings: in the hospital, in the office
  • Vehicles: in the car, in the taxi (but "on the bus/train")
  • Countries/Cities: in France, in Manchester
  • Areas: in the garden, in the park
  • Water: in the sea, in the river

ON - For Surfaces (Something's Touching)

Confusing Cases (The Ones That'll Trip You Up)

Pay attention to these tricky sods:

  • at home vs in the house (home = concept, house = building)
  • in the car vs on the bus (cars are private, buses are public)
  • at the corner vs on the corner (both correct, slightly different meaning)
  • in the street (British) vs on the street (American)
  • at work vs in the office (work = activity, office = place)
