⏰ Why These Three Are Bloody Confusing

These three little words all relate to time, but they're used in completely different ways. Get them wrong and you'll sound like you've never heard of time before! They're like three siblings who look similar but have completely different personalities - and they don't get along.

DURING

Used with NOUNS to show when something happens

Examples:

  • I fell asleep during the meeting (oops!)
  • During the summer, we go to the beach
  • It rained during the night
  • During my childhood, we lived in London
  • Please don't talk during the film

FOR

Used with TIME PERIODS to show duration

Examples:

  • I waited for two hours (bloody ages!)
  • We've lived here for ten years
  • She studied for the exam for weeks
  • I'm going away for the weekend
  • He's been working for 8 hours straight

WHILE

Used with CLAUSES to show simultaneous actions

Examples:

  • I read a book while I waited
  • While you were sleeping, I cleaned the house
  • She called while I was cooking dinner
  • While it's raining, let's stay inside
  • I listen to music while I work
