πββοΈ What are Movement Prepositions?
Movement prepositions tell us how something moves from one place to another. They're like GPS directions for your sentences - except they actually work and won't send you down a bloody dead end! These little words describe the path, direction, or manner of movement.
ALONG
Moving in a line with something, following its length
Examples:
- I walked along the beach for hours
- The cat ran along the fence
- Drive along this road until you see the pub
- The river flows along the valley
ACROSS
Moving from one side to the other side of something
Examples:
- She swam across the lake (mad woman!)
- Look both ways before walking across the street
- The bridge goes across the river
- He threw the ball across the garden
OVER
Moving above and across something
Examples:
- The plane flew over the city
- Jump over the puddle, you muppet!
- The cat leaped over the fence
- We drove over the bridge
THROUGH
Moving from one side to the other, passing inside
Examples:
- We walked through the forest
- The train goes through the tunnel
- She looked through the window
- Water flows through the pipes
AROUND / ROUND
Moving in a circle or curve around something
Examples:
- We walked around the park
- The Earth moves around the Sun
- Turn around and go back
- The dog ran round the tree
UP / DOWN
Moving to a higher or lower position
Examples:
- Climb up the stairs, lazy bones!
- Roll down the hill
- The balloon floated up into the sky
- Rain falls down from the clouds
