Past Continuous
When Life Got in the Way
The Past Continuous is for actions that were happening when life got in the way. It's the tense of interrupted moments, background activities, and things that were going on before everything went tits up.
The Magic Formula (Don't Interrupt This):
was/were + verb + -ing
It's like Present Continuous, but in the past. Revolutionary stuff, really.

When to Use This Interrupted Grammar
1. Interrupted Actions (Life's Specialty):
- "I was having a lovely bath when the phone rang." (Bloody typical)
- "She was cooking dinner when the smoke alarm went off." (Dinner is ruined)
- "We were watching TV when the power went out." (Perfect timing)
2. Background Actions:
- "While I was driving, I saw an accident." (Multitasking)
- "The children were playing while their parents were arguing." (Oblivious to drama)
- "It was raining while we were having our picnic." (British weather)
3. Parallel Past Actions:
- "I was reading while she was cooking." (Domestic bliss)
- "The dog was barking while the cat was hiding." (Natural enemies)
- "Everyone was talking while nobody was listening." (Typical meeting)
Past Continuous vs Past Simple
Past Continuous: The ongoing action (the victim)
Past Simple: The interrupting action (the culprit)
- "I was sleeping when the alarm rang."
- "She was studying when her friends arrived."
- "We were eating when it started to rain."
