Past Perfect Continuous

What's This Unnecessarily Complicated Bollocks?

The Past Perfect Continuous is the most unnecessarily complicated tense in the English language. It's for actions that had been going on for a period of time before another past action. Basically, it's for showing off that you understand ridiculously complex time sequences.

The Magic Formula (Good Luck With This One):

Subject + had been + verb-ing

Use had been for everyone - at least that's consistent!

This is the final boss of English tenses. You've been warned.

Subject Had Been Verb-ing Example
I/You/He/She/It/We/They had been working/waiting/studying I had been working for 10 hours when I finally went home

When to Use This Mental Torture

1. Duration Before a Past Action (The "I Was Knackered" Explanation):

  • "I had been working for 10 hours when I finally went home." (And collapsed)
  • "She had been waiting for 2 hours before the bus arrived." (Typical public transport)
  • "We had been living there for 5 years when we decided to move." (Enough was enough)

2. Cause and Effect in the Past (The "That's Why" Syndrome):

  • "He was tired because he had been running." (Obviously)
  • "The ground was wet because it had been raining." (Sherlock Holmes level deduction)
  • "She was angry because they had been arguing." (Drama ensued)

3. Reported Speech About Past Continuous Actions:

  • "He said he had been working all night." (Poor sod)
  • "She told me she had been studying for the exam." (Good for her)
  • "They claimed they had been trying to call us." (Likely story)

The Timeline of Confusion

This tense shows ongoing action → interruption/result in the past. It's like a flashback within a flashback.

Ongoing Past Action Interruption/Result Combined
I had been cooking when the smoke alarm went off I had been cooking when the smoke alarm went off.
She had been driving for 6 hours before she stopped She had been driving for 6 hours before she stopped.
They had been arguing so the neighbours called the police They had been arguing, so the neighbours called the police.
