Prefixes are bits you stick on the front of words to change their meaning. It's like putting a hat on a word - suddenly it means something completely different.

What Are Prefixes?

They're word parts that go at the beginning of words to modify their meaning. Think of them as word accessories that completely change the vibe.

Formula: Prefix + Root Word = New Meaning

Negative Prefixes (The Pessimistic Bunch)

UN- (The Most Common Downer)

  • happyunhappy (miserable)
  • luckyunlucky (typical)
  • fairunfair (life in a nutshell)
  • doundo (reverse the damage)

IN-/IM-/IL-/IR- (The Fancy Negatives)

  • possibleimpossible (can't be done)
  • legalillegal (against the law)
  • regularirregular (all over the place)
  • completeincomplete (half-arsed)

DIS- (The Disagreeable One)

  • likedislike (can't stand it)
  • agreedisagree (not having it)

Size and Quantity Prefixes (Big and Small)

Prefix Meaning Examples
MINI- Small minibus, miniature, minimize
MICRO- Very small microscope, microwave, microphone
MEGA- Large megastore, megabyte, megaphone
SUPER- Above/beyond superman, supermarket, supernatural
MULTI- Many multicultural, multiply, multimedia

Time and Position Prefixes (When and Where)

PRE- (Before You Even Start)

  • viewpreview (sneak peek)
  • heatpreheat (warm up first)
  • warprewar (before the chaos)

POST- (After the Fact)

  • warpostwar (after the mess)
  • graduatepostgraduate (more studying)
  • modernpostmodern (after being trendy)

OVER-/UNDER- (Too Much/Too Little)

  • cookovercook (burnt to a crisp)
  • sleepoversleep (late again)
  • cookundercook (still raw)
  • estimateunderestimate (didn't see that coming)

RE- (Do It Again):

  • doredo (try again)
  • writerewrite (start over)
  • newrenew (fresh start)

AUTO- (Do It Yourself):
