Present Continuous

For when you want to sound like you're actually doing something right now!

🎬 What's This Present Continuous Business?

The Present Continuous is for talking about things happening right now or temporary situations. It's like live commentary on your boring life!

The Magic Formula:

am/is/are + verb + -ing

I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, they are + doing something

Subject Be Verb Verb + -ing Example
I am working I am working
You are eating You are eating
He/She/It is sleeping She is sleeping
We/They are watching We are watching

⏰ When to Use This Live Action

1. Right Now (This Very Second):

  • "I am reading this lesson." (Obviously)
  • "She is cooking dinner." (Lucky her)
  • "They are watching Netflix." (As usual)

2. Temporary Situations:

  • "I am living with my parents." (Temporarily, hopefully)
  • "He is working at McDonald's." (While studying)
  • "We are staying at a hotel." (For the weekend)

3. Future Plans (Already Arranged):

  • "I am meeting friends tomorrow." (It's in my calendar)
  • "She is flying to Paris next week." (Tickets booked)
  • "We are having a party on Saturday." (You're invited)

🚫 Negative and Questions

Negative: am/is/are + not + verb + -ing

  • "I am not working today." (It's Sunday)
  • "She isn't listening to me." (Story of my life)
  • "They aren't coming to the party." (Their loss)

Questions: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb + -ing?

  • "Are you listening to me?" (Probably not)
  • "Is she coming with us?" (Let's hope so)
  • "What are you doing?" (The eternal question)

⚠️ Verbs That Don't Like -ing

Some verbs are too cool for continuous forms:

  • Mental states: know, understand, believe, think (opinion)
  • Emotions: love, hate, like, want, need
  • Senses: see, hear, smell, taste
  • Possession: have (own), belong, own

Say "I know" not "I am knowing" - unless you want to sound weird!
