The Professional Apologizer: Hired by Cowardly Executives

Meet the man who has built a highly successful business by officially taking the blame and apologising on behalf of cowardly corporate executives.

The Professional Apologizer: Hired by Cowardly Executives

In the high-pressure world of modern corporate business, making a massive mistake can instantly cost a company millions of pounds. When things inevitably go pear-shaped, angry clients demand an immediate and sincere apology. However, many highly-paid executives completely lack the courage to personally face the music. This is exactly where 42-year-old Londoner, Arthur Pendelton, steps in to save the day.

Arthur is a 'Professional Apologizer'. For a remarkably high fee, he is secretly hired by desperate companies to fly across the country, meet deeply furious clients face-to-face, and deliver a perfectly crafted, incredibly sincere apology on behalf of the cowardly management team. We sat down with Arthur in a quiet London cafe to completely get to the bottom of his highly unusual career.

NativeUK: Arthur, this is an incredibly bizarre job. How exactly did you get into the business of professionally saying sorry? It actually started entirely by accident! Ten years ago, I was working as a junior manager in a massive logistics firm. My boss massively dropped the ball on a million-pound delivery. He was absolutely terrified of the client, so he completely panicked and begged me to go to the meeting instead. I walked in, immediately took all the blame, and delivered a highly emotional apology. The angry client was so impressed by my honesty that they actually renewed the contract on the spot! My boss gave me a huge bonus, and I suddenly realised I had a very unique talent. NativeUK: What makes a perfect apology? Why can't these highly educated executives just do it themselves? Egos. Corporate executives are incredibly proud, and their massive egos completely prevent them from showing any true vulnerability. A perfect apology requires you to completely swallow your pride, accept total responsibility without making any cheap excuses, and genuinely validate the other person's anger. Most CEOs would rather throw in the towel than admit they were wrong. I provide them with an easy, stress-free way out. NativeUK: Do the angry clients ever find out that you are just a hired actor and not actually responsible for the disaster? Never! My corporate clients completely brief me on all the technical details before I arrive. I am officially given a fake job title, usually 'Director of Quality Assurance', and I memorize exactly how the mistake happened. Once, I had to apologize to a very wealthy bride because a catering company completely ruined her wedding cake. She yelled at me for forty-five minutes straight! I just stood there, nodded sympathetically, and offered her a massive refund. By the end, she actually hugged me and offered me a glass of champagne! NativeUK: Does absorbing all of that extreme anger from complete strangers ever negatively take a toll on your own mental health? Honestly, no. Because I know I didn't actually cause the problem, I don't take any of the shouting personally. I just see myself as a human sponge, safely absorbing the negative energy to stop a bad situation from legally escalating. Plus, when you are charging five hundred pounds an hour just to look deeply sorry and nod your head, it makes the shouting incredibly easy to put up with!

Arthur's incredible success proves that in a world deeply obsessed with perfection, the simple ability to sincerely admit a massive fault is incredibly rare. As businesses continue to face heavy public scrutiny, the highly secretive demand for professional apologizers is only expected to aggressively grow.
