Garlic Day
The Sensory History of Food. We use the king of herbs to debate the social history of stell and why some foods are considered high class while others are barbaric.
Speaking Discussion
- Why is smell the most powerful sense for triggering memories?
- Should strong smelling food be banned in office kitchens and public transport?
- Is taste something we are born with, or is it a social performance?
- Why do we associate garlic with both health and social exclusion (bad breath)?
- If you had to choose a scent to represent your personality, what would it be?
Activity 1: The Perfumer
The Task: You are a luxury perfumer. You have been challenged to create a scent called the forbidden forest. You MUST use a tiny amount of garlic as a secret ingredient. Pitch your scent to a group of french fashion models. Explain why the danger of the garlic makes it seductive.
Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate
Justify in 30 seconds: 1. 'Your right to eat what you want stops at my nose.' 2. 'The way a person eats is the most honest indicator of their social class.' 3. 'We should prioritise 'flavour' over 'Politeness' in all situations.'
