Monday after Daylight Saving • Recovery

National Napping Day

National Napping Day was created in 1999 by Professor William Anthony and his wife Camille to help the public recover from the lost hour of sleep after Daylight Saving Time begins. It's a day to celebrate the health benefits of the power nap and to challenge the hustle culture that says rest is lazy. This lesson explores the productivity myth—does resting make us better workers, or is napping just for children and the elderly?

Speaking Discussion

  • Why is napping often viewed as lazy in Western culture but essential in others?
  • Do you think daylight saving time (changing the clocks) should be abolished?
  • What is the perfect length for a nap: 20 minutes or 2 hours?
  • Is our modern world too busy to allow people to truly rest?
  • How does lack of sleep influence your personality and your English speaking ability?

Activity 1: The Office Nap

You are an Employee. Your boss just found you sleeping at your desk. Defend your nap using the word "Productivity".

Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate

Justify your answer in 30 seconds:

  • "Every office should have a napping room by law."
  • "Resting is a form of resistance against modern stress."
  • "You can't catch up on sleep; once it's gone, it's gone."
