🎯 What's the Point?
When someone asks "Why are you doing that?", you need to explain your purpose. In English, we mainly use 'to' and 'for' to show why we're doing something. Get it wrong and people will think you're completely barmy!
TO + INFINITIVE
Use 'to' + infinitive to show purpose:
Subject + Verb + to + infinitive
- I went to the shop to buy milk
- She studies hard to pass her exams
- We're saving money to buy a house
- He called me to ask for help
- They left early to avoid traffic
FOR + NOUN/GERUND
Use 'for' + noun or gerund:
Subject + Verb + for + noun/gerund
- I went to the shop for milk
- She studies hard for her exams
- We're saving money for a house
- He called me for help
- This tool is for cutting wood
📏 The Rules (Don't Break Them!)
Rule 1: TO + Infinitive
Use 'to' when you want to show the action that explains your purpose.
Example: I'm going to the gym to exercise.
Rule 2: FOR + Noun
Use 'for' when you mention the thing you want or need.
Example: I'm going to the gym for exercise.
Rule 3: FOR + Gerund
Use 'for' + -ing when talking about the general purpose of something.
Example: This knife is for cutting bread.
Rule 4: Both Can Work!
Sometimes both are correct but with slightly different meanings.
Examples: I went to buy food / I went for food.
