Suffixes are bits you stick on the end of words to change their meaning or word type. It's like giving words a makeover from behind.

What Are Suffixes?

They're word endings that modify meaning or change word types. Think of them as word transformers.

Formula: Root Word + Suffix = New Word/Meaning

Noun-Making Suffixes (Thing Creators)

Suffix Meaning Examples
-ER/-OR Person who does teacher, actor, driver
-TION/-SION Action/process education, decision, creation
-NESS State/quality happiness, sadness, madness
-MENT Result/process development, movement, payment
-ITY Quality/state reality, personality, ability

Adjective-Making Suffixes (Describing Things)

-FUL (Full of Something):

  • carecareful (full of care)
  • hopehopeful (full of hope)
  • painpainful (full of pain, ouch)

-LESS (Without Something):

  • carecareless (without care)
  • hopehopeless (without hope, depressing)
  • painpainless (without pain, lovely)

-ABLE/-IBLE (Can Be Done):

  • readreadable (can be read)
  • believebelievable (can be believed)
  • terrible (can cause terror, awful)

Verb-Making Suffixes (Action Creators)

-IZE/-ISE (Make Into):

  • modernmodernize (make modern)
  • realrealize (make real/understand)
  • specialspecialize (make special)

-FY (Make/Cause):

  • simplesimplify (make simple)
  • classclassify (put in classes)
  • beautybeautify (make beautiful)

Adverb-Making Suffixes (How Things Happen)

-LY (In This Manner):

  • quickquickly (in a quick way)
  • carefulcarefully (in a careful way)
  • stupidstupidly (in a stupid way, obviously)

Comparative and Superlative Suffixes (Bigger and Biggest)

-ER/-EST (More/Most):

  • bigbiggerbiggest

  • uglyuglierugliest (harsh but true)
