Wishes and Regrets

The Grammar of "If Only I Hadn't..."

Wishes and regrets are the grammar of disappointment and daydreaming. Perfect for when you want to express how much your life could be better, or how badly you've cocked things up.

The Wishing Formula:

I wish + past tense (for present wishes)

I wish + past perfect (for past regrets)

If only = stronger wish (more dramatic)

Present Wishes (Things You Want Different Now)

I wish + past simple (for present situations):

  • "I wish I had more money." (But I'm skint)
  • "I wish my boss wasn't such a tosser." (But he is)
  • "I wish I lived by the sea." (But I'm stuck in this dump)
  • "I wish I could speak French." (But I can barely speak English)

Past Regrets (Things You Wish You'd Done Differently)

I wish + past perfect (for past regrets):

  • "I wish I had studied harder at school." (Too late now, mate)
  • "I wish I hadn't eaten that dodgy curry." (Stomach's paying for it)
  • "I wish I had listened to my mother." (She was right all along)
  • "I wish I hadn't said that." (Foot firmly in mouth)

If Only (The Dramatic Version)

If only = I wish (but more emotional):

  • "If only I were taller!" (Dramatic height issues)
  • "If only I had bought Bitcoin in 2010!" (The regret of the century)
  • "If only it would stop raining!" (British weather woes)
  • "If only I hadn't trusted him!" (Betrayal and drama)
Type Structure Example Reality
Present Wish I wish + past simple I wish I were rich I'm poor
Past Regret I wish + past perfect I wish I had gone I didn't go
Future Complaint I wish + would I wish you would listen You don't listen

Other Ways to Express Regret

Alternative regret expressions:

  • I should have... "I should have left earlier." (Obvious in hindsight)
  • I shouldn't have... "I shouldn't have trusted him." (Lesson learned)
  • I regret... "I regret not studying abroad." (Formal regret)
  • What a pity! "What a pity you can't come!" (Disappointment)
