Europe Day

Celebrated on the 9th of May, Europe Day marks the anniversary of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which proposed the creation of what eventually became the European Union. It is a day to celebrate peace and unity across the continent, but also to debate the future of European identity and cooperation.

Speaking Discussion

  • Is national sovereignty a dangerous illusion in a globalised world?
  • Should the world have a universal passport where everyone can live anywhere?
  • Why do humans feel the need to belong to a tribe or a country?
  • Is a global language (like English) a tool for unity or a weapon of cultural destruction?
  • If Europe becomes one super-Country, what should the capital city be?

Activity 1: The Global Diplomat

The Task: You are designing the world union. You must choose: 1) The global tax rate, 2) The global anthem (no words), and 3) The rule for joining. Pitch your borderless world to a room full of angry nationalists.

Activity 2: Rapid Fire Debate

Justify in 30 seconds: 1. 'Borders are just imaginary lines that cause real wars.' 2. 'A country without a border is just a shopping mall.' 3. 'The internet has already destroyed the idea of a 'Country'.'
