Understanding Intimacy Taboos

A day to discuss the historical and cultural barriers surrounding physical intimacy, emphasising the importance of trust, boundaries, and healthy communication between adults.

Ropes representing restrictions and taboos

Speaking Discussion (Adults B2+)

  • Why does society find it so much harder to discuss specific physical acts compared to general romance?
  • In your opinion, is the internet making people more or less responsible when it comes to private intimacy?
  • How does a lack of open communication between partners lead to long-term relationship resentment?
  • Do you think there are still taboo topics that should remain private, or should everything be open for discussion?
  • How do cultural upbringing and religious background shape an adult's view on physical boundaries?

Activity 1: The Taboo Debate

Motion: "The historical and cultural taboos surrounding specific types of physical intimacy are more harmful than protective, as they prevent honest conversation about health and safety."

Split into two teams. Team A argues that taboos create shame and danger; Team B argues that some boundaries are necessary to maintain the sanctity and privacy of adult relationships.

Activity 2: Rapid Fire Sentences
