World Oceans Day

A day to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet and a major source of food, medicine, and critical ecosystems.

  • Are you afraid of the deep ocean, or do you find it fascinating?
  • What are the biggest threats facing our oceans today?
  • How can we solve the problem of millions of tons of plastic entering the sea every year?
  • Would you ever want to live on a boat or work on a submarine?
  • Do you think exploring the deep ocean is actually more important than exploring outer space?

Activity 1: The Great Debate

Motion: "The United Nations should legally ban all commercial fishing in 50% of the world's oceans to allow marine ecosystems to recover, regardless of the economic cost."

Split the class into two sides. Team A must defend urgent environmental protection at all costs; Team B must defend the global economy, food supply chains, and fishing communities.
